Behind police eviction of Occupy, City Council considers raft of planning and zoning measures, Magarity Ford redevelopment clears committee, stray horse in Kensington



The Inquirer details the large-scale police operation to clear Dilworth Plaza, starting with readings of the First Amendment, street closures, tweeting @ occupiers, to the handling of protesters marching through Center City. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey called the operation a success, and the protesters “very confrontational.” The Naked City wonders, how do you think Ramsey measured up?

It’s a mighty big day for planning and zoning today at City Council, finds PlanPhilly’s Jared Brey. Included on the docket are final votes on the Callowhill Neighborhood Improvement District, as are the controversial zoning changes that would permit the Electric Factory to be wrapped in advertising and a Dollar Tree at Chelten Plaza.

On Wednesday, City Council’s Rules Committee cleared the way for the mixed-use redevelopment of the Magarity Ford site in Chestnut Hill to be considered by City Council. Some Chestnut Hill neighbors call spot zoning and object to the scale and density of the project, reports Amy Z. Quinn for NewsWorks/PlanPhilly. The Chestnut Hill Community Association and Philadelphia City Planning Commission are expected to weigh in soon.
