Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW) is seeking a full time Volunteer Coordinator to facilitate and lead public volunteer work days on field projects including trail building, invasive removal, tree planting, litter cleanup, as well as volunteer outreach and educational programming. This position works a Tuesday through Saturday work week and often includes weekly evening hours. The Volunteer Coordinator serves as the primary representative of the organization at our public volunteer events. This position reports to the Development and Outreach Director and performs field work under the direction of the Project Director and in collaboration with the Field Operations Manager to ensure quality project outcomes. The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for tracking and recording volunteer accomplishments and recruiting volunteers to complete tasks as requested by other FOW staff, as well as other duties that may be assigned. This is a both an administrative (70%) and outdoor (30%) position and the Volunteer Coordinator must be able to work outdoors on difficult terrain in all types of weather. 


Regular night and weekend availability is required as well as reliable transportation.


Specific Responsibilities:

• Set-up, equip and staff FOW’s volunteer work days while meaningfully engaging attendees in the organization's mission. This includes, but is not limited to, set up of outreach table materials, signing volunteers in, securing food/coffee donations, photographing work, and recognition via social media.

• Independently recruit and lead volunteer groups in the field, particularly Philadelphia Public School groups and Corporate Work Day Partners.

• Manage the Trail Ambassador program.

• Coordinate adult volunteer educational programming, including management of training classes, certifications, and compliance as well as recruitment of new volunteers.

• Compile and publish a weekly e-newsletter.

• Recruit and organize volunteer support for all FOW events.

• Develop and implement a summer internship program.

• Track volunteer hours and accomplishments.

• Interpret and utilize volunteer participation data to successfully grow the volunteer program & meet strategic goals.

• Coordinate volunteer efforts with other groups working in the park (PPR, WRV, SCA, scouts, etc).

• Produce regular volunteer accomplishment reports for the FOW Board, print and online publications.

• Give talks and presentations at our annual volunteer appreciation night and other events as needed.

• Provide support for FOW events.


Skills and Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or three years of relevant work experience.

• Excellent administrative skills such as planning, organizing, recruiting, and scheduling.

• Proven ability to lead volunteers in the field. Experience working with diverse groups from a wide age range strongly preferred.

• Working knowledge of issues in volunteer management, environmental education, sustainable trail and habitat management. 

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Experience working with hand tools and ability to lift at least 30 pounds.

• Ability to work independently and maintain a balance between outdoor and administrative duties.

• Current CPR / First Aid Training or willingness to acquire within two weeks of hire.

• Valid Driver's License, clean driving record, & reliable transportation.

• Willingness to obtain a Criminal Background Check and Child Abuse History Background Check.

• Proficiency with MS Office Suite and familiarity with Raiser’s Edge or similar database software.

• Familiarity with digital photography and basic photo editing skills.
