Pennsport, considered one of the oldest areas in Philadelphia, is a neighborhood in South Philadelphia. This neighborhood stretches from 4th Street to the Delaware River and from Snyder Avenue to Washington Avenue. Pennsport played a vital role during colonial times as a bustling port, transporting goods down the Delaware River to other riverside communities and settlements. Pennsport remained an important area throughout the Revolutionary War, housing an encampment site for Union soldiers in Jefferson Square Park. The community’s waterfront continued to play a vital role during World War II, enlisting numerous longshoremen to work long hours making and shipping materials for soldiers fighting overseas. Because of Pennsport’s history and importance throughout the nation’s development, the area has accumulated a diverse network of architectural landmarks. Many residential houses can be dated back to as early as 1815. The area is also recognized for its annual Mummers Parade on New Years Day. Today Pennsport is one of the most desired residential neighborhoods along the river, with residents who pride themselves on being laid back and approachable.
