ABOUT QUEEN VILLAGE

Queen Village, also known as Southwark, is a neighborhood in Central Philadelphia. Stretching from Front Street to 6th Street and from South Street to Washington Avenue, Queen Village was at the center of the commercial and ship building insdustries that made Philadelphia’s seaport one of the biggest in the young Americas colonies. Like other South Philadelphia neighborhoods, Queen Village was originally settled by the Swedes, and their influence in the area can still be seen today in street names such as Swanson, Christian, and Queen. While Queen Village is not very historically renowned, as seen etched into the exterior of a building “ON THIS SITE IN 1879, NOTHING HAPPENED!”, the area has recently seen an interest in the preservation of historical buildings. The area boasts a plethora of architectural diversity featuring houses from the 18th to 21st centuries. Today the community sits in an ideal part of town, sandwiched between cultural hotspots such as Independence Hall and the Delaware River Front. The area also features great shopping and food locations on the historic and scenic South Street.
